True Light

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
John 1:9 (NIV)

I remember when I was at a crossroads, trying to decide whether to continue to work in the corporate world or to follow the call of God on my life and go to seminary. I knew what I wanted, but I was hesitant and felt unqualified. Thankfully God made it extremely clear to me that Christian ministry was what he had called me to do. It took multiple people confirming what I thought God was saying to me before I finally surrendered. Every step of the way, he continued to illuminate the right path for me to take. Thankfully God made it extremely clear to me that Christian ministry was what he had called me to do. Light is powerful. Without it, we wouldn’t have growth, warmth, or even life. It’s a symbol of knowledge and goodness. John, in writing his gospel, says the true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. As a disciple close to Jesus, he knew firsthand that Jesus is the true light of the world, the one who overcame the dark emptiness of death.

Jesus chose to come into our world to save us, to show us the way out of the dark. But it’s easy for us to let ourselves get caught up in seeking fulfillment in other things like our careers, relationships, or finances—things that may look bright and shiny, but can leave us feeling something is missing. It’s only in Christ, the true light, that we can find real fulfillment.

The Bible says in Isaiah that God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours. Why would we settle for less than what God has for us? When we surrender to Jesus, we begin to walk along the path he created for us. Just as he lit my way for me, he will do the same for you.

Advent is the perfect time to share your story of how God is working in your life, so others realize he can also work in theirs.

Reflect

  1. What path are you following right now? Where are you expecting it to lead?
  2. What are you going to do this Advent season to show others the true light of Jesus?

Share Your Blessing

  1. Lift the spirits of local hospice staff by surprising them with breakfast, favorite snacks, and a card to let them know how much you appreciate the work they do.
  2. Donate a Journey Bag for a foster child. When children enter the foster care system, they frequently arrive at their new foster home with nothing. A Journey Bag is a backpack, or duffel bag filled with comfort items and essentials intended to help ease the transition. Pick up a Journey Bag tag at your campus, and return the bag with items by January 10.
