Trusting The Prince Of Peace

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)

Have you ever wondered who you can trust? I experienced that recently while walking through the passing of my father. First of all we had to choose from different treatment options. Later on, we were faced with difficult decisions in the probate process. Throughout this time, I was seeking trustworthy people who could give me sound advice.

Beyond the personal decisions that I faced with Dad, it seems we are all looking for dependable sources we can count on. Every topic imaginable these days has vocal, passionate support as well as opposition. There is a growing institutional mistrust throughout our society. We face what seems to be greater division than ever.

When the prophet Isaiah penned Isaiah 9:6, he was addressing a dramatically divided culture. The nation of Israel was split in two: Judah in the South and Israel in the North. The political climate was full of division and fear over which alliances should be formed to provide the most protection from enemy nations.

In the midst of all the chaos, Isaiah poetically lifts their eyes (and ours) to a future One who would provide the needed, trustworthy leadership. Over 700 years before the birth of Jesus, Isaiah points not to an ‘alliance’ to bring peace, but to a Person. Neither infrastructure and alliances, nor military might and political prowess are stable foundations upon which to place our confidence. Only Jesus is worthy of our ultimate trust.

Are you facing a difficult decision? Jesus is a Wonderful Counselor who will advise and guide your steps. Are you experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety? Jesus is the Prince of Peace, and offers his peace to you. Are you feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders? He is the Mighty God who is more than able to strengthen you. In this Christmas season, we celebrate the birth of Jesus who we can depend upon fully at all times and in every situation of life.

Share with friends

Reflect

  1. Take a moment and identify some examples of where your trust might be in something or someone other than Jesus.
  2. Now take those areas to him in prayer. Surrender them and place your confidence in him alone.

Share Your Blessing

  1. If you're in the Greenville area, gather some friends or family members, and collect items for Miracle Hill Ministries gift bags this Christmas. These bags are full of necessities, as well as small gifts of encouragement.
  2. To help prepare for any obstacles that may arise during the school year, partner with your local Title 1 school to drop off school supplies, along with gift cards for any families in need of food.
